Born in Harlem and having grown up in Queens, Yvonne Turner is a pioneer of house music whose crucial contributions are often overlooked. In 1984, she released an instrumental dub version of Colonel Abrams' “Music Is the Answer”, which was played up and down in New York clubs The Loft and Paradise Garage and, with its stripped-down sound, paved the way from disco to a new genre yet to be fully defined. Turner continued to produce music into the 90s, including an official remix of Whitney Houston's “I'm Your Baby Tonight”, an influence on acts like Masters At Work and Kerrie Chandler. After working mainly as a teacher for almost two decades, she returned to music a few years ago, recording tracks with the late American disco vocalist Loleatta Holloway. Following her recent interview with Lakuti and Tama Sumo for a Resident Advisor podcast, we're delighted to hear the New Yorker at Panorama Bar for this edition of Your Love alongside DJ extraordinaire Maurice Fulton.
